Why Phoenix Pools Don't Winterize — And What You Should Be Doing Instead

If you've moved to Phoenix from a colder climate — the Midwest, the Northeast, the Pacific Northwest — there's a good chance someone has already asked you about winterizing your pool. Or maybe you've wondered about it yourself. Back home, closing down the pool for winter was just part of the calendar. You drained the lines, covered it up, and didn't think about it again until Memorial Day.

Here in Arizona, that approach would be a serious and expensive mistake. Here's why.

What "Winterizing" Actually Means — and Why It Doesn't Apply Here

In cold climates, winterization protects a pool from freeze damage. Water expands when it freezes, which can crack pipes, fittings, pumps, and pool shells. The solution is to drain the water from the lines, blow them out with compressed air, add antifreeze to certain components, and cover the pool until spring. It's a necessary process when temperatures drop well below freezing for extended periods.

Phoenix doesn't have that problem. Our winters are mild. Temperatures rarely dip below freezing, and when they do it's brief — overnight lows that recover quickly. There's no sustained freeze risk that would justify draining a pool or shutting down equipment.

Why Draining Your Pool in Arizona Can Cause Serious Damage

This is the part that surprises most people new to Arizona: draining your pool here isn't just unnecessary — it can cause the very damage you were trying to avoid.

Arizona soil exerts what's called hydrostatic pressure — groundwater pushes up from below. When a pool is full, the weight of the water counterbalances that pressure and holds the pool shell in the ground. When you drain a pool, you remove that counterbalance. The result can be a pool shell that literally pops out of the ground, cracks, or shifts — requiring structural repairs that can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Beyond the structural risk, an empty pool exposed to Arizona's intense sun causes plaster to dry out and crack. Surfaces that are designed to always be submerged deteriorate rapidly when left exposed. What looks like a cost-saving measure can quickly become one of the most expensive mistakes a pool owner makes.

Your Pool Still Needs Attention in Winter — Maybe More Than You Think

Here's the other piece of this that catches new Arizona pool owners off guard: your pool still needs regular maintenance through the winter. It doesn't need as much as summer, but it absolutely cannot be ignored.

Algae doesn't hibernate. It grows more slowly in cooler water, but it still grows — and an unattended pool in January can absolutely turn green. Water chemistry still shifts with temperature changes, rainfall, and evaporation. Equipment still runs and still needs monitoring. Winter is actually a great time to address equipment issues, resurfacing, or any work that's easier to do when the pool isn't getting heavy use.

At PoolUp Pros, we maintain pools year-round for exactly this reason. Winter service may look slightly different than summer service, but the fundamentals — chemistry testing and balancing, cleaning, equipment checks — don't stop just because it's December.

What to Do Instead of Winterizing

The Arizona equivalent of winterizing is simply keeping up with regular maintenance through the cooler months. That means continuing weekly service, adjusting chemical levels to account for cooler water temperatures and less evaporation, keeping the pump running on an appropriate schedule, and using winter as an opportunity to address anything that needs attention before the busy season returns.

If you're new to Arizona and have questions about what your pool needs through the cooler months — or if you've been skipping service and want to know where things stand — we're glad to take a look.
